Chong Yong was born in 1972 and received his diploma in Fine art from Malaysian Institute of Art. In 1994, Chong Yong began to breach some of the parameters of his youthful practice where he cultivated parallel interests by prospecting a number of fields, such as theatre, performance and installation art strategies. In that year he participated in a butoh performance with the Sutra Dance Theatre in Kuala Lumpur; he pursued this involvement for over two years. In 1996, he initiated a performance art event in conjunction with an initiative titled Chair, at GaleriWan in Kuala Lumpur. His recent work was in May 2000 where he did installations, environments and sites, a contemporary art exhibition at Malacca old court house in Melaka called "Apa Gendai".
